Mercury retrograde October 2026: exact dates, degrees and your houses

Every few months the group chat fills up with “Mercury’s retrograde, that explains it.” The next one starts on Saturday 24 October 2026, and this time it has company: Venus is retrograde too. Even the dates online don’t quite agree. Some sites have Venus turning direct on the 13th, others on the 14th.

When is Mercury retrograde in October 2026?

Mercury stations retrograde at 07:11 UTC on Saturday 24 October 2026, at 20°58′ Scorpio. It stations direct at 15:55 UTC on Friday 13 November 2026, at 5°02′ Scorpio. It never leaves Scorpio, shadows included.

That’s 20 days of retrograde motion. The UK clocks go back in the small hours of Sunday 25 October, so the start falls on British Summer Time and the end on GMT. On the US west coast it lands at 00:11 on the 24th, barely past midnight, and in Hawaii it’s still Friday 23 October 2026. Always check which time zone a date is given in.

Every Mercury retrograde in 2026

This is the third of three this year. All of them start in water signs: Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio.

After this one, the next starts on Tuesday 9 February 2027 at 5°58′ Pisces. Mercury retrogrades about every four months, so each one gets its own few weeks of attention and then the sky moves on.

The shadow period, start to finish

Astrologers count the shadow as part of the cycle. The pre-shadow starts on Sunday 4 October 2026, when Mercury first reaches 5°02′ Scorpio, the degree where it will later turn direct. The post-shadow ends on Monday 30 November 2026, when it finally passes 20°58′ Scorpio again. Between those dates Mercury covers the same stretch of Scorpio three times.

That slow crawl is why astrologers give the days around each station the most weight. Mercury sits on almost the same degree for the best part of a week.

What is actually happening in the sky

Nothing changes direction out there. Mercury keeps orbiting the Sun the same way it always does.

Mercury is on the inside track and laps us three or four times a year. When it swings round the near side of the Sun, it appears to drift backwards against the stars. Mercury and Venus retrograde together

This one has company. Venus stationed retrograde on Saturday 3 October 2026 at 8°29′ Scorpio. It slips back into Libra on Sunday 25 October 2026, and turns direct at 00:22 UTC on Saturday 14 November 2026, at 22°51′ Libra. In the Americas that’s still the evening of the 13th, so you’ll see both dates.

So for about 20 days, from Mercury’s station on the 24th to its turn on the 13th, the two closest planets to Earth are both moving backwards. Mercury is read as how we think and talk, Venus as what and whom we value. Put together, it’s an old-fashioned recipe for rethinking a relationship conversation rather than starting one.

That’s six different houses across six people, which is why a generic “Mercury retrograde horoscope” can only go so far. Robin’s is the striking one: Mercury stands still in the 6th house just 14′ short of Robin’s descendant, the cusp of partnership. For Robin, this retrograde is about conversations with a partner. How to use the three weeks

None of this makes your phone break. But if you like to work with the sky, the tradition is clear and fairly sensible:

• Finish, don’t start. The “re” words fit: review, revise, reply, reconnect.
• Read twice, send once. Mercury is messages. Check the address line and the tone.
• Back things up. Not because of Mercury, but it’s a good reminder.
• Go deep. Scorpio is the sign of what’s under the surface: shared money, trust and the conversations people avoid. A good few weeks to have one honestly.

Common mistakes

• Using a date without a time zone. A station a few hours either side of midnight UTC lands on different days around the world.
• Forgetting the shadow. The weeks either side are part of the same story.
