What the rising sign tells you
Your Sun sign is the part of you that takes a lifetime to grow into. Your rising sign is the part people meet first: your manner, your style, how you walk into a room and how you start things. Many people who never felt like their Sun sign recognise themselves straight away in their Rising.
It also sets the houses. Once the rising degree is known, the twelve houses fall into place around the chart, which is why charts without a birth time leave them out. More in the rising sign explained and the twelve houses.
Questions
Why does the rising sign need my birth time?
The rising sign is whichever sign was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. The Earth's turn brings a new sign up about every two hours, so even half an hour can change it.
My birth certificate doesn't have a time. What now?
Ask a parent, look for a hospital record or baby book, or check whether your country records times on the long-form certificate. Without a time we can still give you your Sun and, most days, your Moon sign.
Is rising sign the same as ascendant?
Yes. Ascendant is the astronomical name for the degree of the zodiac on the eastern horizon; rising sign is the sign that degree falls in.
Why is my rising sign different on another site?
Usually the time zone. Plenty of calculators use today's daylight saving rules for old dates. We use the rules that were actually in force where and when you were born.
