Rising sign calculator data: how much does your birth time matter?

Rising sign calculator example: Sam's birth chart wheel for 2 July 1992 at 21:10 in London, with Capricorn rising on the left-hand horizon
Sam's chart (London, 2 July 1992, 21:10) has Capricorn rising. In London, Capricorn spends 107 minutes a day on the horizon; Aries manages 52.

You’ve probably heard that your rising sign changes every two hours. It’s a handy rule, and it’s wrong for most of the world. Some signs rush over the horizon in under an hour. Others take nearly three. If your birth time was rounded, or guessed, that difference decides whether your rising sign is real.

So we measured it. Using the same engine as our rising sign calculator, we timed every sign rising in six cities, minute by minute, and then moved one real birth time by up to two hours in each direction. Here’s what the numbers say.

How much does birth time change a rising sign?

On average the ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so a whole 30° sign takes about two hours. But “on average” is doing a lot of work. In London a sign can rise in 52 minutes or take 171.

For one real person, here’s the slack. Robin was born at 8:30am in Chicago with 21°12′ Taurus rising. Robin’s rising sign stays Taurus from 57 minutes earlier to 27 minutes later. Sam, born at 9:10pm in London with 10°14′ Capricorn rising, has 41 minutes one way and 64 the other. Different people, very different margins.

How long each sign rises, in six cities

We sampled the ascendant every minute through one full turn of the sky (a sidereal day, 23 hours 56 minutes) starting at midnight UTC on 22 October 2026, and counted the minutes each sign spent rising. The pattern depends on latitude, not the date, so these figures hold on any day of the year.

Minutes each sign spends as the rising sign over one sidereal day. Calculated by the Charthood engine, 22 October 2026, sampled every minute. Cities run north to south.

Three things jump out.

  • Near the equator the rule works. In Lagos every sign rises for between 106 and 130 minutes. Two hours, give or take.
  • The further north, the bigger the gap. London runs from 52 minutes (Aries) to 171 (Virgo). In Edinburgh Pisces gets 42 minutes. In Reykjavík, Pisces is rising for just 12 minutes a day, while Scorpio holds the horizon for 217.
  • The southern hemisphere flips it. In Sydney it runs the other way round: Virgo and Libra, two of the slowest risers in the north, get only 80 minutes each.

Why some signs rise fast

The zodiac runs along the ecliptic, the Sun’s yearly path. That path is tilted about 23.4° against the Earth’s equator. As the Earth turns, some stretches of the ecliptic come up over the horizon steeply and some come up almost sideways. A sign that rises sideways slides up quickly and is gone. Astrologers have a name for the two groups: signs of short ascension (Capricorn to Gemini in the northern hemisphere) and long ascension (Cancer to Sagittarius).

Latitude makes the tilt matter more. At the equator the effect is small. Close to the Arctic Circle it’s extreme, and inside it some degrees never rise at all. That’s why charts for places like Tromsø can’t use Placidus houses and fall back to Porphyry.

One birth time, moved by two hours

Here’s Robin’s chart recalculated with the birth time moved earlier and later. Same day, same city. Only the clock changes.

Robin's chart (Chicago, born 8:30am) recalculated with the birth time shifted. Ascendant, Midheaven and Moon from the Charthood engine; Sun's house in Placidus.

Two hours either way gives three different rising signs: Aries, Taurus and Gemini. The Sun moves from the 12th house to the 10th, which changes the reading of where Robin puts their energy. Even the Midheaven, which moves more slowly, crosses from Capricorn to Aquarius.

What about the moon sign?

The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart. It covers about 13° a day, so it changes sign every two and a half days or so. Most of the time your birth time doesn’t change your Moon sign. But if you were born on a day the Moon changed sign, it can.

Robin is one of those people. Their Moon sits at 29°02′ Libra, and by 10:30am it has crossed into Scorpio. That’s why a good moon and rising sign calculator should tell you when your Moon sign depends on the time. Ours does: if you tick I don’t know the time and the Moon changed sign that day, the chart says so and names both signs.

Can you find your rising sign without a birth time?

Not with certainty. But a rough window narrows it a lot. If Robin only knew “some time between half seven and nine in the morning”, all but a few minutes at each end gives Taurus rising. That’s a fair bet. For someone born in Edinburgh with Pisces rising, the same window could cover three signs.

Try your earliest and latest possible times in the rising sign calculator. If both give the same sign, you can be fairly confident. If not, read both and see which fits, or work with an astrologer on rectification, which tests possible times against events in your life. Our rising sign explainer covers what the sign itself means.

Before you trust any birth time, check how it was converted. The time zone matters as much as the minute.

That history is what turns “8:30am in Chicago, March 1990” into the right universal time. The same document is candid that many pre-1970 records are uncertain, so for older births, check the UTC time your chart says it used. Places come from GeoNames, each with its own time zone.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming two hours per sign. True in Lagos, not in London, and badly wrong in Reykjavík.
  • Rounding the time. “About half eight” can be 08:20 or 08:40. For Robin that’s fine. For a Pisces rising Londoner it might not be.
  • Forgetting summer time. Clocks change on different dates in different years and countries. A calculator should handle it from the place, not ask you to.
  • Mixing up AM and PM. Twelve hours out gives you the opposite side of the zodiac rising.
  • Ignoring the degree. A rising sign at 1° or 29° is a warning light. Check the time before you build a reading on it.

If your time is solid, none of this changes anything. If it isn’t, ten minutes with the numbers will tell you how much to trust your rising sign. And if you want the rest of the chart read step by step, start with how to read your birth chart.

Questions people ask

How accurate does my birth time need to be for a rising sign?

It depends on where you were born and which sign was rising. Robin, born in Chicago with Taurus rising, has under half an hour of slack one way and nearly an hour the other. In Edinburgh the whole of Pisces rises in about 42 minutes, so someone born there with Pisces rising may have only minutes to spare.

Does every rising sign last two hours?

Only near the equator. In Lagos the signs rise for 106 to 130 minutes each. In London the range is 52 to 171 minutes, and in Reykjavík it's 12 to 217.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. You can narrow it down: if you know you were born in the morning, a rising sign calculator can show which signs were possible in that window. Some people work backwards from life events with an astrologer, which is called rectification.

Why does my rising sign differ between two websites?

Usually the time zone or a summer time rule for your birth year, sometimes a mistyped AM/PM, and occasionally a birthplace that resolved to the wrong town. The astronomy itself rarely disagrees.
